Protesters calling for a cease-fire in the Israel-Hamas war and accusing Israel of committing “genocide” in the territory of Gaza, interrupted a Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing on the confirmation of former Treasury Secretary Jack Lew to be ambassador to Israel.
“Stop the genocide of Palestinians,” one protester said. “We need a cease-fire now. Stop sending aid to Israel.”
Another disrupted the hearing, brandishing a sign that said “cease fire now” and asking, “How many children need to be killed” before the U.S. government calls for a cease fire. “Our families are dying,” he said.

As head of the Treasury under former President Barack Obama, Lew was involved in the administration’s negotiations with Iran over its nuclear program, a role for which Republicans have criticized him.
Lew also served as President Obama’s chief of staff and held the role of director of the Office of Management and Budget for both Obama and former President Bill Clinton.
